Test Format Section

1
Listening
Duration: 30 minutes (+ 10 minutes transfer time). Four recorded sections testing your ability to understand main ideas, detailed information, opinions, attitudes, and the purpose of speakers in various contexts.

Reading
Duration: 60 minutes. Three reading passages with tasks testing reading comprehension, including identifying information, writer's views, detailed information, and understanding logical arguments.

Writing
Duration: 60 minutes. Two writing tasks requiring academic writing skills. Task 1 differs between Academic (describe visual information) and General Training (write a letter). Task 2 is an essay for both formats.

Speaking
Duration: 11-14 minutes. Face-to-face interview with certified examiner in three parts: introduction and general questions, individual long turn, and two-way discussion on abstract topics.

What is IELTS and who accepts it?
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the world's most widely accepted English language test for study, work, and migration. It is recognized by over 11,000 organizations worldwide including universities, employers, professional bodies, immigration authorities, and government agencies in countries like UK, USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and many others.
What are the IELTS test formats?
IELTS has two formats:

⦁ Academic: For students applying for higher education and professional registration
⦁ General Training: For migration to English-speaking countries and work experience programs

Both formats test four skills: Listening (30 min), Reading (60 min), Writing (60 min), and Speaking (11-14 min). Listening and Speaking are the same in both formats, while Reading and Writing sections differ based on the test type.
How is IELTS scored?
⦁ Band 9: Expert user (full operational command)
⦁ Band 8: Very good user (fully operational with occasional inaccuracies)
⦁ Band 7: Good user (operational command with some inaccuracies)
⦁ Band 6: Competent user (effective command despite inaccuracies)
⦁ Band 5-1: Lower proficiency levels

You receive individual band scores for each skill plus an Overall Band Score (average of four skills). Universities typically require 6.0-7.5+ depending on the program.
What score do I need for my goals?
Score requirements vary by purpose:
⦁ Undergraduate Studies: Overall 6.0-6.5, no section below 5.5-6.0
⦁ Postgraduate Studies: Overall 6.5-7.5, no section below 6.0-6.5
⦁ Professional Registration: Overall 7.0-8.0 (nursing, medical, engineering)
⦁ Immigration: 6.0-7.0+ depending on country and visa category
⦁ UK Student Visa: Overall 5.5-6.0 for undergraduate, 6.0-6.5 for postgraduate
